Additional Dress
Price: $9.75
Amish girls never have to worry about staying in style because they wear the same style of dress that Amish women of all ages have been wearing for hundreds of years. Younger girls will sometimes wear lighter colors, but as they grow older they wear traditional dark colors. The material is always one solid color with no pattern. Using traditional patterns that have been passed down for generations the dresses are made by a young girl's mother or older sister and will use snaps, hooks and eyes or straight pins instead of buttons or zippers. No matter what the weather, Amish girls always wear dresses. Warm knit stockings or tights help keep their legs warm in the winter while warm spring and summer days call for bare feet – even on school days!

Prayer Covering
Price: $9.00
The prayer covering is perhaps the most recognize symbol of the Amish women. The prayer covering is worn to church by Amish girls including young toddlers because they believe it is a symbol of their submission to God. However, once a girl joins the Amish church in her late teen years she will then wear the covering everyday. In the morning, after putting her hair up in a traditional coil bun, she will wear the covering all day until bedtime. Because of the hand stitching involved and because the material is sheer and difficult to work with, making coverings is a task often given to an older, skilled woman in the family.

Black Bonnet
Price: $16.50
Chilly weather calls for an Amish girl to wear a bonnet instead of a knit hat like you may wear. An Amish bonnet is difficult to make because it has many pieces and several layers of fabric fashioned around a stiff piece of bonnet board. There is also a great deal of hand stitching involved. It can take a seamstress two hours to make a small bonnet that will protect her daughter's hair bun and covering from becoming smashed or mussed. Dark blue, dark purple and black are the three traditional colors for bonnets.

Friend Sized Quilt
Price: $16.50
Quilts play an important role in the culture of Amish people. From the time children are young they help cut and piece together quilt squares in various patterns. The skilled hand of an older woman in the family will then sew the squares together to form the quilt top. Children again participate by stitching simple knot stitches to the quilt top, batting and bottom layer. The Sunshine and Shadow pattern on our Friendship Quilts shows diamond patters of dark (shadow) material alternating with light (sunshine) colored materials. A needle, quilting floss and instructions are included with each Friendship Quilt so if you would like, you can try your hand at knot stitching too!
